Fractures

What is a fracture?

Fractures and broken bones actually mean the same thing. Statistically an average person can expect to sustain approximately 2 fractures in his/her lifetime. Fractures occur when the bone cannot handle the energy placed on it. So breaking a bone will depend on two factors: bone's strength and the amount of energy. The energy can be high (such as crash or other accident) or low (such as stress fracture). And your bone density can be either normal or decreased (osteoporosis).

Types of fractures

  • Oblique - a fracture which goes at an angle to the axis
  • Comminuted - a fracture of many relatively small fragments
  • Spiral - a fracture which runs around the axis of the bone
  • Compound - a fracture (also called open) which breaks the skin
